Created fifty years ago after a three-way conversation in a public house, the Old Gaffers Association grew into a group of enthusiasts who rescued a vital part of our maritime heritage from almost certain extinction. This jaunty celebration, lavishly illustrated, demonstrates how gaff-rigged sailing vessels are alive in a way no other boat could ever be. In this book their owners tell of their stylish, characterful and sea-kindly craft - and some of their adventures. There are tales, too, of solo sailors and families embarking on voyages across the oceans that have seen the Old Gaffers Association become a world-wide community. Jim Rockeller, owner of the Bald Mountain Boat Works in Camden, Maine, and instigator of the first OGA group in America, wrote of the OGA in 1968: 'Membership requirements are simple. One needn't know the difference between a throat and a peak halyard; one need only know that putting to sea in a gaff-rigged vessel is a special kind of magic not found in other kinds of sailing.' This magic of traditional sailing has cast its spell much closer to home, too - simply messing about in boats, alone, joining in regattas or cruising with families and friends. This book will delight every boating enthusiast. As the cheers greeting the traditional boats that graced The Queen's Jubilee Thames Pageant showed, they bring out the salty seadog in us all.

During their university holidays in the late 1880s, S.K. Baker and three of his University College friends clad in stripy blazers and boaters spent time sailing and camping on the Norfolk Broads. Baker, a keen artist and diarist, recorded their travels in watercolour in two small leather bound books. The result is an entirely charming, funny account along the lines of the legendary Three Men in a Boat with which the notebooks are entirely contemporaneous although the protagonists are younger and possibly naughtier. Baker records their evenings in the pub, their encounters with girls, (both ashore and afloat), nude swimming and culinary disasters, while recording lovingly the landscape and the boats on which they sailed. The notebook is published as a facsimile with an introduction by Michael Goffe, the son of one of Baker's fellow students, to whom it was gifted. This is suggested as two separate books although they could be bound up together with a combination title.

This is the reassuring voice of the ocean sailing community. Your big adventure starts here. For many sailors, an ocean passage is the big dream. But many will worry that they don't have the right experience, that their boat isn't strong enough, or that it will be prohibitively expensive and difficult. Ocean Sailing will prepare you for an ocean passage by painting a picture of what ocean sailing is really like, through the experiences of others who have gone before. Topics covered range from safety to boat kit and preparations, budgeting to staying in touch with home, equipment breakdowns to health and weather. Members of three great cruising clubs – the Royal Cruising Club, Ocean Cruising Club, and the Cruising Club of America – share their vast wealth of experience, and by focusing on the practicalities of ocean sailing, allay the anxieties and doubts of prospective ocean cruisers to ensure a deeply satisfying ocean voyage.
